Ligue 1 giant Paris St Germain have completed the deal for the son of former Ballon d’Or winner Geroge Weah, giving the first pro deal to Timothy Weah - now a United States youth star, committed to the Parc des Princes until 2020.
Weah won the 1995 Ballon d’Or while playing for PSG, AC Milan and Monaco. The former Liberia international was quite known for his skills and exploits during his time. His son, Tim was born in New York and has decided to follow his path.
Tim joined Les Parisien’s youth academy in 2014. He featured in the recent Under 17 CONCACAF Championship in Panama. Last term he played for the youth side of PSG in the UEFA Youth League. He impressed in his first start, scoring three goals in the 8-1 defeat of Bulgarian club Ludogrets Razgrad.
“I am very proud to continue my adventure with PSG by signing this professional contract. I am at a great club and I cannot wait to continue to progress towards my goal of one day playing for the senior side,” the younger Weah said.
PSG also offered right back Colin Dagba a pro deal. The 18-year old defender has been with the youth side. He is set to remain with the club until 2020 as well. Stanley N’Soki and Metehan Guclu were also offered pro deals.
Weah is one to watch out for in the future - he is just over 30/1 on netbet.co.uk to follow in his father's footsteps and win the Ballon D'Or at some stage in his career = but one player who all Ballon D'Or fans already know about is Lionel Messi, who has also signed on the dotted line.
The Barcelona superstar has agreed fresh terms with the club after some time negotiating the deal. The fans surely heaved a sigh of relief as the Argentina international agrees to remain because it would have been too tumultuous if the player left the club now. The new deal is expected to run until 2021 which would see the player reach 34 years by then.
The club management were sure the player would remain at the club to cement his legacy but there have been disagreement that could have resulted in players’ revolt. It was the final 12 months of his contract with the club and as he aged, the Josep Maria Bartomeu-led management were concerned about increasing wages and promising lengthy contractual obligations.
The player is arguably the best in history so an extension was simply appropriate after his immense contribution to the team’s success. The deal would also force other players who are all loyal to Messi to remain. Andres Iniesta, Neymar, Luis Suarez, Sergio Busquets and many others are loyal to him. Most of the first team have agreed to new deal so it was business as usual for Messi to agree. Iniesta is yet to get at least another year very soon as his current deal is set to lapse next summer.
Messi deal will attract others as Barca seeks more players to join its ranks. Messi’s deal would bring calm and convince others to join in and rebuild the elite side. PSG star Marco Verratti is a target as a few others.
With his biggest rival Cristiano Ronaldo winning even more trophies for Real Madrid since reaching the big 30, Messi is expected to continue to contribute to more success for Barca with the agreement to the new deal. He can still get one or two more FIFA Ballon d’Or award and cement his legacy in the international scene.
