Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves reckons that the Red Devils will be getting a huge leap into getting of the Ballon d’Or winner in their ranks is the sign Borussia Dortmund striker Ousmane Dembele.
The 19-year-old has been rated as one of the top strikers in European football. The fact that he is still in his teens has made him one of the sought-after signings for top clubs. Since his £12.5 million move to Borussia Dortmund last summer, he has been able to contribute directly 25 goals in the league this season.
United manager José Mourinho is reportedly heavily impressed by the striker so much so that he is ready to spend around £50 million on his signature. This would be an astronomical sum to pay for a teenager, but Dortmund are unlikely to sell him for anything less. The French striker will be attracted to the possibility of joining United only if the club are able to qualify for the Champions League next season.
Hargreaves thinks that there is a great possibility for the ability to win the Ballon d’Or in the future. Apart from being able to score goals, Dembele has also been able to provide 17 assists.
His ability to play anywhere across the front three also makes him an ideal signing for United."I think he has the potential [to win the Ballon d’Or]. I think he’s going to be there. He has had a remarkable season for Dortmund already – he’s had 17 assists in all competitions – and he’s been devastating. He’s magnificent with both feet and so quick, so powerful. Eventually, he’s going to be in that Ballon d’Or conversation. He’s that good a player. Everybody in Germany has been impressed by how talented a player he is at the stage of his career,” said Hargreaves.
